Love-it or Hate-it Dish of Finland?! New recipe 😍

It's time to cook "kaalilaatikko". Will you try this dish at home?

Hei, hope you're well!

It's no secret that my granny (now 83) is my hero. I have again a wonderful classic recipe for you to share, the Finnish Cabbage Casserole aka 'kaalilaatikko' in Finnish.

This recipe by my granny takes me straight back to my grandparent's red cabin where they had a huge vegetable patch with all sorts of cabbages.

So this dish has truly been a staple in our family.

Besides easily feeding a big hungry bunch of people, it's a regular go-to dish to pack into meal portions and freeze.

Also, cabbage has a funny naked history in Finland. :D You can discover this in the recipe blog.

Have you tried kaalilaatikko? Will you be making it at home?

I'd love to know because this dish is either love-it or hate-it.

Yours

Varpu

PS. Next Monday, I'll have a one-of-kind Finnish language summer offer for you! Want to kick-start your Finnish journey with me live online? Stay tuned.

⭐ Achieve your goals with this Finnish power phrase

Do you sometimes over-complicate things? Read this...

Hi!

In the Finnish culture, when we feel that we are over-complicating something or focusing too much on the tiny details, we try to remind ourselves "to see the forest without the trees".

In Finnish: "nähdä metsä puilta".

This powerful, nature-inspired phrase captures how valuable it is to see the big picture.

If we don't see it, we often waste our time worrying about details that really don't help us achieve our goals.

Which is why today, I want to share with you my top blog post for seeing the big picture of the Finnish language.

After this post you'll:

  • connect with the essentials of the Finnish language
  • Add fun methods to learning Finnish
  • Get my best tips for remembering Finnish words

PS1. When it comes to Finnish language details, what's the one thing that you worry about the most?

PS2. Made this cone cow that I had on my summer bucket list. You only need a cone and sticks.

💡 15 dig-a-little-deeper questions to ask a Finn

Get to know the Finn you're talking to more with these fun questions...

Hei, how are you?

I'm good! The first summer days are here in Lahti, and we are enjoying them with open arms.

I'm also looking forward to meeting friends, family, and building new connections… Maybe you are too?

That's why I made you a fun list of 15 dig-a-little-deeper questions that can fill up Finnish silence nicely. ;)

I wanted to create questions that aren't too difficult to answer and that help you get to know the Finn you're talking to more.

1. What's your favorite public holiday in Finland?

2. Would you prefer to live in the country or in the city?

3. What's your favorite month?

4. Do you prefer lakes or the sea?

5. What was your favorite book as a child?

6. Who is your favorite Moomin character?

7. What's your favorite chocolate candy?

8. After buttering a bread slice, do you put ham or cheese next on top of the bread? (a Finnish version of the cereal or milk first debate)

9. How do you drink your coffee?

10. What's your favorite scent?

11. What's your favorite season?

12. Have you ever seen the northern lights?

13. Do you like ice swimming?

14. Who is your favorite Finnish athlete or celebrity?

15. Do you prefer to go to a wood-burning or to smoke sauna?

I hope these conversation starters bring you lovely moments with new and old friends!

Would you like me to translate these conversation starters into Finnish for you too?

Yours,

Varpu

Ps. Who is your favorite Moomin character? Mine is Little My <3
